It’s 2024, a new year when VR can be dead I renew my best wishes for you, hoping that 2024 will bring you and the people you love everything that you have always wished for. And I’m sure that among these things there are my roundups of the best XR news. So here you are a summary of all the (very few) things in XR that happened during these Winter Holidays!
Alongside the announcement of the new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, Qualcomm also revealed its latest reference headset, a mixed reality device that’s likely the foundation of Samsung’s upcoming headset. A new free tool injects VR support into almost any modern PC game made with Unreal Engine. If you've been in the consumer VR scene since the early days you may remember VorpX, a paid injector tool that promised to let you play hundreds of PC games in your VR headset. Archiact, the veteran studio known for a host of VR titles, announced it’s laying off a portion of its staff. The number of staff affected by the layoff hasn’t been confirmed. Rambus has introduced its fourth-generation registering clock driver (RCD) chip for server-grade DDR5 memory modules. The updated RCD chip brings support for higher clockspeeds on DDR5 RDIMMs, allowing for future RDIMMs to run as fast as DDR5-7200, a step ahead of their current third-generation/DDR5-6400 RCD. Faster DDR5 RDIMMs will eventually go hand-in-hand with upcoming server platforms, with AMD, Intel, and others all eyeing significantly higher memory speeds for their next round of products

Qualcomm just announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. XR2+ Gen 2 is a higher-end variant of the XR2 Gen 2 chip used in Meta Quest 3, with the GPU clocked 15% higher and the CPU clocked 20% higher. The new chip also supports higher resolution display output: up to 4.3K per eye at 90Hz or 3.7K per eye at 120Hz. That compares to up to 3.1K per eye at 90Hz or 2.7K per eye at 120Hz for the base XR2 Gen 2.

Since when has learning and development (L&D) become such a negative experience with its intended learners? First Contact Entertainment, developers behind the tactical team shooter franchise Firewall , is shuttering the studio, citing the “lack of support for VR within the industry.” Founded in 2016, First Contact has developed two of the PSVR platform’s most visible exclusives: Firewall Zero Hour (2018) and the recently released sequel Firewall Ultra (2023) , which landed solely on PSVR 2.

Quest 3 was the fourth most used VR headset on Steam in December, surpassing the original HTC Vive. The data point comes from the Steam Hardware & Software Survey. It's offered to a random sample of Steam’s user base each month. If you accept, it uploads a list of your PC specs and peripherals to Valve, as well as any headset used on SteamVR in the past month.
