A smartphone or laptop monitor that responds to eye movement and verbal commands, for example, is working more closely with the human mind than the device that requires touch or mouse and keyboard. In January of 2017, FOVE, a Japanese VR startup, released the first eye-tracking VR headset. Industry Is Changing.
Oculus Chief Scientist Michael Abrash, for example, expects high quality solutions to be implemented into VR headsets five years from now. Eye-tracking has a number of applications for VR, including foveated rendering and avatar replication, and can already been seen in upcoming headsets like the FOVE 0. million in this industry too.
When the UK-based VR studio, Rewind, asked me if I wanted to come and see a demo of its eye-tracking tech demo for the upcoming FOVE 0 headset, I was intrigued. At this point it’s important to note I’m not here to assess the FOVE itself; we’ll be doing that later on. Rewind is happy to offer up some examples of this.
Dinosaur kicking for $300 is certainly funny, but it’s also a great example of a broad effort by developers and hardware manufacturers to make virtual worlds more responsive to human behavior. FOVE is distributing a eye-tracking headset too.
Basic examples of what the tech could do include auto-scrolling of text while reading or sheet music while playing an instrument, and the ability to pause or control a video player with your eyes while your hands are occupied. Read more here.
The most infamous example is of course, the legendary 3DHead system. Eye tracking, the main USP of the recently released FOVE headset , seems to be one of the most likely additional technologies to make its way into future generations of consumer virtual reality given its obvious experiential and performance benefits.
