Perhaps it wanders to highly visible applications in gaming, film, art, and retail. Oculus Rift powered the virtual experience. High-resolution imagery and low-latency head-tracking brought people into a virtual environment. What comes to mind when you think of virtual reality ? That includes banking.
This frontier state is radically different from modern game and film graphics. We cover a wide domain of applications, including self-driving cars, robotics, and game and film graphics. But first, to put them and our vision for future AR/VR systems in context, let’s examine how current film, game, and modern VR systems work.
As for resolution, the company maintains the screen door effect (SDE) is diminished with the headset’s dual 1440×1600@90 Hz LCD displays, a 70 percent increase in pixels over consumer devices like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. image courtesy Sensics. image courtesy Sensics. image courtesy Sensics. image courtesy Sensics. .”
Today, Oculus is announcing that the groundbreaking virtual reality short film, Lost , is coming to the Samsung Gear VR. Lost originally premiered for the Oculus Rift and was clearly designed with the unique capabilities and limitations of that system in mind. Lost 360 will be free on the Oculus Store.
Just in time for the holiday season, cinematic VR pioneer, Jaunt, has launched its custom Jaunt VR App for PlayStation VR, adding it to their existing integrations in iOS, Android, Gear VR, Google Daydream, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and major desktop browsers.
Today, Jaunt has applications on just about every consumer VR platform including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream. The only notable exception to Jaunt’s availability on the various hardware platforms was Sony’s PlayStation VR headset.
The concept of using head-mounted cameras to track facial movement has been in development since the early ’90s, and although it later found practical application in the film and video game industries, giving animated characters a more human touch , it seems virtual reality is poised to bring technology to the consumer market in a big way.
Highlights of today’s remarkable announcements include: CieAR is unveiling its new AR film platform which enables a unique and immersive film experience in real space and time with life-sized 3D virtual characters. www.ciear.ca. www.massless.io www.deepoptics.com. link] twnkls is showcasing new mobile AR applications and solutions.
When travelling – pre pandemic, one of the more relaxing experiences was sitting back, watching Netflix premieres on my own portable Imax – The Oculus Quest. This brings up the question: Why aren’t the OTT apps offering stereoscopic 3D versions of films when available, that are perfect for such immersive viewing platforms?
And that’s why I had to fire up the time machine again, and dust off an even older video of mine: Figure 2 : VR Quake 3 Arena Map Viewer , uploaded to YouTube on February 26th, 2007 (but filmed about a year earlier than that, and showing software developed in mid-2005 — holy cow, I still had some hair back then!).
Now you can film wherever you want, even on a soccer pitch, and then simply apply the pre-calibrated stitch template to get a perfectly aligned result! This is a massive overkill, since the latest Oculus Rift Crescent Bay edition contains a 1440p display. However, Oculus does aim for content shown at 80fps!

Since its announcement at Google I/O earlier in the year, Daydream has been positioned as a potential usurper to the mobile VR throne currently occupied by Samsung and Oculus with Gear VR. Headtracking, app selection, and overall performance inside View were all top notch. The Remote. The remote is View’s ace in the hole.
VR also dominated the pop culture, featuring prominently in films like “Johnny Mnemonic,” “Lawnmower Man” and “Virtuosity.” It’s easy to see how, in the early 1960s, such a system could be viewed as a logical next step beyond the film and television of the day.
