Meta's Unity and Unreal "OpenXR" integrations block other PC VR headsets, and developers aren't happy about it. But companies like Meta and Pico still also offer their own integrations for Unity and Unreal. OpenXR is the open standard API for AR/VR/MR supported by the vast majority of the industry.
Oculus is making hard shift away from its proprietary developer APIs in favor of OpenXR, an industry-backed project that aims to standardize the development of VR and AR applications. ” Oculus announced this month that it plans to begin deprecating the existing Oculus Mobile and Oculus PC SDK in favor of OpenXR. .”
Meta will recommend that developers use the built-in OpenXR support of Unity and Unreal from next week. It’s a major milestone, according to Khronos Group which has overseen development of the standard by a consortium of many of the biggest names in the AR/VR sector. OpenXR’s ‘working group’, under which representatives from member companies have been actively developing the standard, is facilitated by Khronos Group.
