Today Ultraleap has officially released Gemini, the fifth-version of the handstracking runtime. Project North Star is an opensource augmented reality headset that LeapMotion has designed and gifted to the community.

In my unboxing video, you may see that I’ve found an additional LeapMotion v1 controller + LeapMotion mount for RealMax + USB-C cable for LeapMotion. It gets the job done and it is usable, but it is subpar even if compared to other standalone headsets on the market like the Oculus Quest.

Meta is rolling out update v37 for Oculus Quest and Quest 2 bringing quality-of-life improvements like interface tweaks and tracking support for the Apple Magic Keyboard. At CES 2019 this week, Pimax is showing off the production versions of their “8K” and “5K” Plus headsets, their upcoming Knuckles-style controllers, as well as hand-tracking and eye-tracking modules. The LeapMotion module, which attaches to the underside of the headset, can be seen here.

Launched back in 2012, LeapMotion first introduced us to their new way of interacting with computers in three dimensions. At the time, the LeapMotion sensor sat on your desk or was built into your keyboard, allowing for natural hand and finger movement tracking.
There were several announcements at Oculus Connect 6 (OC6) this year that could have taken the top spot. Oculus Link for example or Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond are two worthy mentions, yet it must be the experimental handtracking feature for Oculus Quest that takes home the crown, especially after testing the technology first-hand.

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has kicked off Oculus Connect 6 with several exciting announcements, the biggest being an update for Oculus Quest which will see hand-tracking added to the system in 2020. Facebook Reality Labs has achieved this using AI and neural networks to recognise your hands.
One part of the characteristics of VRTK is its management of the project/scene for specific platforms (Oculus, Vive, etc.). One of the biggest drawbacks of HTC Vive headsets with regard to Oculus Rift are the controllers: while Oculus Touch is ergonomic and can emulate the hands quite well, Vive has controllers that are quite big and are usable only as wands.
