I was expecting a PSVR 2 launch in 2021, but then suddenly Jim Ryan in an interview with The Washington Post has commented on VR with these exact words: PlayStation believes in VR. More info (New features of OpenXR) More info (OpenXR in Unity) More info (OpenXR in Microsoft products). All the reviewers are amazed.
At the same time, major workplace application developers Microsoft debuted its follow-up to Altspace VR and Immersed debuted an MR headset which could rival the biggest names on the market. The new XR collaboration platform replaces Microsoft’s predecessor, AltspaceVR, and will debut in October as a public preview.
This team will be based in Redmond, Washington and will work to, “prototype complete systems that will bring together work in machine perception, optics, displays, human perception, haptics, audio, input, graphics, UI/UX, mobile computing, silicon, sensing, batteries, and whatever else is needed to create a truly compelling AR experience.”

Alan: Slicing fruit in VR is magical, and the fact that they have the haptic feedback to the controller is just… [implied Chef Kiss]. One of the things that was demoed there, there was a presentation from Microsoft about the new Hololens 2. You’re right, it is a magical experience. A lot of companies focusing on it.

And then he went to go start the HITLab in Washington. As I go to these different developer conferences, I go to Facebook F8, or Microsoft Build, or Google IO. And people have already been able to do that by turning their torso into an ear, by rewiring, taking audio sounds, transmitting it to a different haptic feedback onto your body.

Haptic feedback. Once we can simulate haptics, we can simulate what tissues feel like, both normal and pathological, as well as simulate what physiology feels like. Suitable haptics aren’t ready today, but we’ll be first in line when they are. This is the primary advantage a physical cadaver lab has over a virtual lab.
They won’t stop at augmenting our eyes, either, Bose already has wearable devices (they look like glasses, but don’t really do much for your eyes, it’s rather your ears they focused on) that augment our hearing and there are tons of haptic devices being developed that augment our ability to feel, touch and other things.
Inside-out tracking was expected after having seen the controllers, but the haptic feedback on the head is a very welcome surprise. Having tried the bHaptics facial haptics interface , I can tell you that being headshot in a game and feeling a vibration on your face is very fun. This could be The Unity Cube 2.0.
One of the biggest endorsements for XR in the last years has been the $22B contract that Microsoft signed with the US Army to provide a modified version of HoloLens 2 glasses that should “improve the lethality” of troops. bHaptics announced TactGlove haptics glove. The US Army confirms IVAS deployment for 2022. News worth a mention.
