Microsoft’s play for command of next generation personal computing can be seen today with the announcement of a series of Windows-powered VR headsets starting at $300. The headsets planned from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer will use what’s known as “inside-out” position tracking.

AR in particular requires such accurate and low latency tracking that virtual objects can appear fixed to the real world. We’ve seen very impressive inside-out positional tracking before on Microsoft’s HoloLens —a $3,000 full-blown Windows PC on your head—which houses a bevy of sensors.

For example, headtracking can come from optical trackers or inertial ones. Many game engines – such as Unity, Unreal and SteamVR- immediately support it. Microsoft Hololens kits are shipping to developers, but are not priced for consumers yet. A key OSVR goal is to create abstract device interfaces.
