Sony’s new headset, officially dubbed the SRH-S1 “content creation system” combines a compact form-factor with novel controllers. I got to check out the headset first-hand at AWE 2024 and came away impressed with the headset itself, even if the input and tracking still need some work.

The same goes for Valve, Apple, and Sony, whose established presence here would allow them to cut into the high-end section of the market without much difficulty. Hardware-based big tech companies would further fuel the wave, introducing their own devices or expanding their VR device product lines.
According to early reports by consumers, Sony’s PlayStation VR headset is capable of running on current major consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U. While it was hinted at in previous showings that the PSVR would include PC support, it’s almost certain that Sony did not intend for the device to operate on rival consoles.
Built exclusively for Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation VR platform, it’s labelled “a system of transcendence” by the creators but more fundamentally a “spatial reasoning puzzle.”
The only notable exception to Jaunt’s availability on the various hardware platforms was Sony’s PlayStation VR headset. The PS VR is compatible only with Sony’s PlayStation 4 video game console. Tagged with: jaunt , playstation , PS VR , sony. As of today, however, that exception no longer applies.
But in the case of when I played The Inpatient from Supermassive Games and Sony, none of that was the case. For this demo I just had to pick using headtracked pointing and the X button. The lights are bright, the sounds are loud, and the constant shuffling of bodies makes it hard to really focus on the experience at hand.
The Sony panels are uniquely designed for myopia adjustment, meaning you get fantastic focus, regardless of any visual issues you might have. Plus, unlike many other AR glasses, these specs come with built-in hand and headtracking, for immersive interactivity.
On one hand, I’d tell you that Housemarque’s incredible arcade classic is still intact in this latest version that graces Sony’s new VR headset. We could do a full review of Super Stardust Ultra VR , but it would be a pretty convoluted thing. So Invasion Mode doesn’t really work like Stardust at all.
Originally a Dreamcast game way back when, it’s bumped around–mostly on Sony platforms–over the years. The game uses both the controller and headtracking to aim. So, the controller was good for rapid movements across the screen while your head is great for fine aiming. Remember Rez ?
Unlike in the case of PlayStation’s Move or Xbox’s Kinect, it seems like Sony is actually getting serious about VR. Instead of using a scheme similar to Rigs or Resident Evil 7 (headtracked and analog stick aiming) the game asks you to hold up the controller and aim it in place of the Aim. It feels silly and awkward.

Even with those caveats, the experience was worlds removed from the torture of trying to watch a movie in my Sony HMZ-T1. For one, the Sony isn’t technically a VR headset, and for two, I never finished watching a movie in it. On top of that, the entire idea of a non-headtrackedhead-mounted movie viewer is flawed.
All the big names in tech are working on their own devices, including Apple, Sony, Samsung, and Google. We do not want to simply exchange a regular camera for a VR camera and use head-tracking as a gimmick. The recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas made it clear: virtual reality is taking on serious forms !
