The VR route is instead being pursued by HTC (with its VEC event happening soon) and IEEE. The idea of the algorithm is rendering the VR experience at low resolution and then use Machine Learning magic to expand this low-res rendering to the native resolution of Quest while preserving the visual fidelity.

HTC is now selling certified refurbished Vive HMDs for $400. HTC has started selling again the OG Vive headset, but this time selling second-hand devices. This also means that HTC is not abandoning the headset and so it will be easy to find second-hand replacement parts, something that is not possible for the Rift CV1, for instance.

Compare that to the HTC Vive that has like 40 giant infrared lights that strobe constantly to synchronize everything and spinning lasers with infrared light… and then the Kinect that has this huge laser illumination system, so those systems work totally different than ours.
