The HTC Vive is arguably the best out there, but having to buy a souped-up laptop just to run it, paying full price for brief games that feel more like demos, and trailing a huge cable off your head and fumbling to mount trackers on your ceiling…it’s not ideal. Being able to pick up your VR hardware and take it with you is a big benefit.

I don’t see the same trends he does as far as mainstream Sandhill Road venture capitalists coming in. Looking forward, we’re going to keep observing this trend. The VR market is a very exciting new trend, but if it doesn’t take off as fast as everyone hopes, does a company have a way to continue to grow and get to a stable business?
Oculus isn’t the first and many more manufacturers are following the trend and coming out with their own standalone devices. The pinnacle of standalone performance is HTC Vive’s Focus headset that that uses "world-scale" and is similar to the HTC vive, a powerful headset tethered to a PC.
