So (a bit late) here you are a list of some of the most relevant XR trends to follow in 2024, with some predictions of what to expect next. Many companies always follow the trends set by Apple, and the XR field is no exception to this rule. Basically, Google could try to be for standalone devices what Steam has been for the PC VR ones.
HTC to reveal its headset at CES. After many weeks of teasing, HTC is finally ready to unveil its new headset at CES. I expect the usual HTC headset, with technical innovations, but a price that doesn’t make it compelling for users. Looking ahead to 2023, there are six exciting trends in the AR shopping space to keep an eye on. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Lenovo, and Vuzix are developing smart glasses to enhance the AR experience. This trend becomes possible thanks to avatar platforms and AR features such as image targets and body tracking.
A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. FCC certifications are requested before releasing an electronic device in the US (to certify that it is safe to be used), so this is a clear sign that HTC is going to release a new headset soon.
Microsoft 365 is coming to Quest Pro! It has also partnered with Microsoft and Accenture to facilitate the integration of XR solutions inside companies. This trend was in my opinion one of the most relevant news from Connect. At a certain point, Zuck totally surprised me by announcing a strategic partnership with Microsoft.
At least from the outside, it appears Microsoft isn’t actively competing for a seat at the XR table, which is fairly odd coming from a company that pioneered enterprise AR while simultaneously wrangling some of its top OEM partners to make a fleet of PC VR headsets for consumers in 2017. If Microsoft goes in half-cocked, maybe.
But hey, let me play this game anyway, so here you are my predictions for virtual reality in 2021 based on the trends and the anticipations that we had at the end of 2020! I expect all these trends to continue in 2021, for a year that will see the growth of the technology on all its sides (software and hardware).
