This year Razer made one of my favorite sketches, announcing the release of the Razer Skibidi, the headset that is able to translate what you say to the language of Gen Z and vice versa. Ndreams announced Synapse 2, but only for Google Cardboard, and Voodoo DE showed a preview of a very futuristic device.

Today Razer is announcing a $5 million OSVR development fund which the company will use to incentivize support of its open-source VR platform. This gives developers a minimum expectation of ROI when building for OSVR and incentivizes Razer and OSVR to help co-market developers projects in order to sell those pre-purchased keys.
Sure, there are smartphone powered, mobile VR headsets, but those lack some important features that can only be found in “tethered” headsets like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. Today, however, a new VR ready laptop is being announced by Razer that will allow you to move more freely while still enjoying high-quality VR.
Razer Chief Executive and co-founder Min-Liang Tan has stated his company’s intent to dominate China’s rapidly growing virtual reality market, with new products built around the OSVR platform, tailored to the region launching next month. The OSVR HDK 2 sits in a unique position in the market, aimed towards developers of VR software and hardware, but also offering an interesting alternative to the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive for enthusiasts willing to take the risk on a not-consumer-ready device. HTC Vive XR Elite HTC Vive XR Elite (Image by HTC Vive) The star of the event has for sure been the Vive XR Elite, HTC’s latest flagship headset. One is the high cost: HTC markets it as a consumer device, but at that price, not many consumers are going to buy it, so it will be a prosumer one.
The THXAAA chip, as the company calls it, is an ASIC chip that’s being made in conjunction with Triad Semiconductor , a firm who has also worked with Valve to create components of the HTC Vive’s Lighthouse tracking technology. The THXAAA chip is the company’s first step into component offerings.
Half-Life 2: VR , a revamped version of an older mod which will adapt the beloved Half-Life 2 for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, has been green-lit, signifying Valve’s official acceptance of the mod for distribution on Steam. Here’s some gameplay from the original mod played on the Rift DK1.

Razer opens pre-orders for OSVR HDK 2 virtual reality headset Today, Razer announced that it is opening up pre-orders for the company’s second OSVR development kit, called the HDK 2. It’s available for $399 and boasts a new 2160×1200, low-persistence OLED display running at 90 frames per second. Read more here.

The Razer-fronted Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) platform was announced along with its very first flagship hardware, the Hacker Developer Kit (HDK for short). At MWC in Barcelona in March that year, HTC unveiled the Valve/SteamVR driven Vive headset and arguably went on to dominate the Game Developer Conference (GDC) show which followed.
We don’t know if it is just a reference design for external partners (like HTC) or it is an actual headset that Valve is producing. Someone hypothesizes that Valve may produce the headset by itself because: HTC has started its own store, Viveport , and so it is not pushing Steam as an official store anymore.
This particular experience was built for HTC Vive, with room-scale and accurate motion controllers giving trainees that all important ‘hand presence’ throughout. Earlier work include this high voltage switching experience built for the Oculus Rift DK2 and Razer Hydra motion controllers (see above).

About a year and a half ago, Intel invested in Razer bringing the valuation of the said company to north of $1 billion. Today, Razer is bringing Hacker Development Kit 2.0 Intel claims to bring room scale VR and “global VR” without the need for external sensors such as HTC’s Lighthouse or Oculus Constellation.
Of those 800, all of them support the HTC Vive officially, whereas only 180 support the Oculus Rift. Of those, not all of them are optimized for Touch, but rather may be optimized for the Razer Hydra, or another third-party peripheral.
