We had at the same time the Game Developer Conference (the GDC) and the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) by NVIDIA, so we had lots of announcements about 3D technology in general and also about XR. There have been companies that have tried to compete with HTC in this market, but they all had their big share of trouble in doing that.

More info (Quest 3 going ok in Steam Hardware Survey) More info (Quest 2 selling much better than Quest 3 on Amazon) HTC announced the Vive Ultimate Tracker Finally, HTC has officially announced the Vive Ultimate Tracker, its standalone inside-out tracker unit. But for now, we are not sure at all this is going to happen.

I’m sure that after April, 20th, the Meta Quest ecosystem will appear even richer than it is now , creating a wider gap with other companies that may think about competing with the Quest, that is Pico, HTC, and even Apple. Unity talked about PlayStation VR 2 at GDC. Unity had a talk about developing for PlayStation VR 2 at GDC 2022.

Instead of showing people how the “metaverse” is now with very rough images (that easily become memes) or how it may be in the future with some fluffy videos, Zuck has used the best technologies from the Meta R&D department: Meta’s Codec Avatars. I would have loved this to come as a standard option for the device.

But I didn’t want to switch to a 2D workflow once I imported into Unity, and so I used Virtual Desktop’s display overlay to work in Unity on a virtual big screen.
