The latest data from Valve’s Steam Survey shows the Rift and Windows VR headsets continuing growth streaks in their share of monthly-connected headsets on Steam, snatching share mostly from the Vive and Vive Pro. Beyond the price differences, HTC also has a new PC headset on the way, the Vive Cosmos, which was announced in January.

The monthly Steam hardware survey is out again, and while June hasn’t revealed any major upsets in the balances of usership between HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the survey shows that Windows “Mixed Reality” VR headsets are making slow, but steady headway on the platform. Surprisingly, Steam appears to have retained nearly all of the growth in VR usage brought on by Alyx four months after the launch of the game, according to Valve’s monthly Steam Survey. Samsung has apparently completed a prototype, and “is deciding the release date”.

Much like Oculus’ Samsung Gear VR, according to the report, this mysterious new version will include a wireless remote and a wide selection of games and experiences accessible via a VR interface. The idea is to focus on a standalone system that sacrifices power and cables in favor of a convenience and wireless functionality.
The first Windows MR headsets arrived in late 2017 from Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, aiming to compete with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that had launched a year earlier. On the Steam Hardware Survey Windows MR peaked at around 10% of SteamVR usage share, and now sits around 5%.
This includes all the Windows MR headsets from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, including HP's Reverb G2 , released in 2020. According to the Steam hardware survey, Windows Mixed Reality headsets are still used by 50–80,000 people today. Its userbase is superior to known PCVR headsets like the HTC Vive Pro and Pro 2 and most probably in the next weeks, it will also surpass the Pico 4. I cross my fingers, but I don’t have high hopes.

The first one is the usual SteamVR hardware survey. Apart from highlighting that the Rift S is expanding its size and that the Valve Index is now selling well, the survey shows that VR users on Steam are continuously growing. Samsung Odyssey+ is now at $230. According to Road To VR, we have now 1.3M Better Adoption = Better ROI.
This leaves Oculus, Google and HTC to split about a million units. According to this report, HTC’s Vive edged out Facebook’s Rift selling “more than 400K at its $800 price point.” Samsung is the only company to have released actual numbers, saying 5 million Gear VR headsets have been sold so far.
The organization found that, by the end of 2016, the Oculus Rift is projected to sell 355,088 units; the HTC Vive will sell 420,108 units; Google Daydream will sell 450,083 units; and the PS VR will sell 2,602,307 units.
All the other major companies (Samsung, Huawei, etc…) are working on AR and Apple for sure can’t stop experimenting with if it doesn’t want to miss the next communication platform as Microsoft did with Windows Phone. HTC has released some interesting statistics on the VR market.
In addition to the low-end Google Cardboard, the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Samsung Gear VR and most recently Google Daydream, provide a variety of viewers with different capabilities and price points. The rush of developers moving into the market to supply VR hardware also speaks to the excitement in this space.

The pilot, which used an iPad and HTC Vive powered by Marxent’s 3D Cloud Service, showed that VR increases average order value by 60%. In the virtual reality space, HTC targeted enterprise with the debut of the Vive Pro VR Kit intended for work applications like training and design.

I remember in, oh man, it must be 2015/16, Coachella livestreamed 360 content to VR headsets and I believe it was pushing to the -- it was! -- it was the Samsung GearyVR at the time. And they took regular HTC Vive Games, which only need a 10x10 space. Sam: Yeah, you're right. And if you look at it, it's not very sexy.
HTC has finally revealed the price of the Vive Pro : it will cost $799 just to have the headset (no controller and no base stations, so you must already have a Vive 1 kit) and will be available for pre-orders since April, 5th. The tracking system leaves something to be desired, with two sensors that track only 180 degrees of motion (as opposed to the laser-powered Lighthouse tracking system from the HTC Vive, which tracks in full 360 degrees). So HTC has given us some Vive Focus and we love them, because being untethered is a huge important part of having audience come in and not feeling like it’s a hassle, but really having this like ritualistic atmospheric experience without breaking that sense of immersion. But otherwise we’re using the Samsung Gear VR.

Microsoft and Samsung may be partnering for an AR device. According to Korean media, Samsung Electronics is working with Microsoft on a new augmented/mixed reality project “involving HoloLens”. Samsung is one of the most famous suppliers of components for electronic devices (e.g. Samsung Odyssey+).
