It's all about reliability and low latency. XR experiences can be rich and engaging, but also bandwidth intensive. How will connectivity make or break XR's promise? This post appeared first on AR Insider.
I had the opportunity to participate in the Curse of the Lost Pearl — an Indiana Jones-inspired adventure where you embark on a mission to find an ancient pearl deep in the catacombs of what looked like either a Mayan or Aztec pyramid. Zero Latency VR Zero Latency VR is a well-known company in the LBE space.
Source: Indiana University A saccade is a rapid movement of the eye between fixation points. At 9˚ eccentricity, acuity drops to 20% of the maximum acuity, and at 30˚ acuity drops to 7.4% of the max acuity. Given this, it appears that SMI’s values work, but are generous compared to what the eye can see.
So from a latency perspective, human eye can see 150 points vertically and 180 points horizontally. If latency is a function of proximity, all of a sudden, you need to move the compute as close to the device or the user as possible. And it’s all about high-frequency trading and the latency associated with high-frequency trading.

So if you ride Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom attraction, there’s this fake steering wheel on the ride that makes people think they’re steering the experience. The Void is different compared to companies like Zero Latency, who just have the backpack, and multiple players involved in game narrative.

There are anyway a few caveats: first of all, cloud rendering requires high-speed low-latency networks, and possibly a rendering edge server that is always close enough to the user. It could be a game-changer for XR. This network architecture is not available, yet. It’s still a mystery why this store page got published.
