This chipset will reportedly be integrated into Samsung and Sony headsets, Play for Dream MR and Immersed’s Visor. MagicLeap Ditching its Hardware Business? MagicLeap has reportedly laid off its sales and marketing teams because it decided to focus on licensing the technology behind its headsets.
To its credit, the company had the foresight to release HoloLens in 2016, a full two years before unicorn startup MagicLeap could get its first standalone AR headset out the door. Three years later it released HoloLens 2, which directly competes today against MagicLeap Two.
Provided the report is true, it appears Google will now need to rely on Samsung to compete with Meta and Apple in XR. MagicLeap has entered a "multi-faceted, strategic technology partnership" with Google. The companies say the partnership will combine MagicLeap's "leadership in optics and manufacturing" with Google's "technology platforms". Google was an initial investor in MagicLeap, leading a $542 million funding round back in 2014.
Relative to enterprise-focused AR headsets like MagicLeap 2 and HoloLens 2, it’s also less expensive due to the inclusion of cheaper and less complicated optics, called ‘birdbath’ optics, which project light from a microdisplay to the eye via what’s essentially a curved see-through mirror (among other things).

With Android XR, Google wants to power a broad range of proprietary and third-party experiences, spanning all the way from the upcoming Samsung XR headset , to smart glasses, and extended reality applications infused with artificial intelligence. This strategy has already paid dividends for Google so far.
This comes alongside an alleged partnership with Samsung that would see the development of a wholly new consumer AR device that is rumored to tether to a Samsung smartphone. Making an AR headset accessible enough for consumers is a vastly different challenge to producing higher cost enterprise headsets— just ask MagicLeap.

Google is also hiring high-profile people for it, like Bernard Kress, principal optical architect on Microsoft’s HoloLens team, and Paul Greco, the previous CTO of MagicLeap. I think that Zuck is now all-in with XR, and all these games are not relevant to Facebook’s current strategy, so the deal has not been completed.
