In spite of the fact we’re joking around and playing Angry Birds on MagicLeap, the whole thing feels very grown up, in the sense that these guys are in this for the long haul, and so, they reckon, is the business of making Mixed Reality. We’ve been saying all along we want more players, more competition.
Image courtesy Digital Trends Zune didn’t generate the sort of loyal customer base that Apple had in spades because entering rapidly evolving product categories isn’t easy. Three years later it released HoloLens 2, which directly competes today against MagicLeap Two.
Between leaks, announcements, and official info, we have had this week a glimpse of the future of Meta, which won’t be only about XR but will include also many other trending technologies like AI and 5G. MagicLeap 2 has inside-out tracked controllers. More info (MagicLeap presentation) More info (Close up of the controllers).
Stanford and Samsung create a super-high-resolution display. A joint work of the University of Stanford together with Samsung Research has let a team working on optics and another one working on solar panels collaborate to create a new kind of OLED displays featuring 10,000 pixels per inch. More info.
Apple's announcement today is a very good validation of the overall XR/spatial computing sector," MagicLeap founder Rony Abovitz wrote to me. Companies like NVIDIA, Samsung, Google, Lenovo, HP, and Acer sought portions of underdeveloped systems, and VR's winter was harsh to many.
I think this trend will continue and probably in 12 months the support for the Quest 1 will be dropped by many games : the jump in computational power is so big that keeping Quest 1 compatibility would require too much effort for the developers; Facebook has clarified that the new Oculus Link will keep the compatibility with SteamVR.
Auidences are watching, developers are already working on realityOS applications, and XR device vendors are making a move towards the spatial computing trend of 2024. On the other hand, firms like MagicLeap and XREAL are receiving millions in funding to potentially leapfrog the forecasted success of Apple’s Vision Pro.
Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la MagicLeap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens. Being able to pick up your VR hardware and take it with you is a big benefit.
See the trend? MagicLeap has put forth the term Magicverse, a more playful version of a global digital twin that inspires visions of the fantastical. This has been the winning formula in the Web 2.0 era, which has driven adoption from 1 billion Internet users in 2005 to nearly 4 billion in 2019.
And this year, we’ll see further growth of this trend, which has still a big untapped potential: many new items to try-before-you-buy, new features available for filters, new popular ecosystems (like WeChat) that are going to adopt it properly. What will see a decreasing trend is everything that is about people going outside.
I don’t see the same trends he does as far as mainstream Sandhill Road venture capitalists coming in. Looking forward, we’re going to keep observing this trend. The VR market is a very exciting new trend, but if it doesn’t take off as fast as everyone hopes, does a company have a way to continue to grow and get to a stable business?
So I would say it’s the most in-depth book about what’s happening in AR and what the trends are today. Alan: So speaking of looking into the future, somebody else who’s kind of looking to the future that you’ve been covering in your Forbes articles is MagicLeap, and their CEO, Rony. Alan: Awesome.

According to John Carmack , Oculus CTO noted that the Oculus Go will perform "significantly better" than the Samsung Gear. Oculus isn’t the first and many more manufacturers are following the trend and coming out with their own standalone devices. Additionally, MagicLeap is one of the most funded startups in history.
Following the landmark VR headset adoption trend kicked off by accessible Meta Quest 2 headsets, interest is shifting to the next big trend in XR: AR smart glasses and mixed reality headsets. 2024 may be the start of an XR shift. The development of XR for enterprises and consumers is notably rising in the US and EU.
GB: MagicLeap is a big presence in the AR discussion. Outside of the sort of people in this room and in the games press, I don’t think most people know what MagicLeap is. When you talk about investment, certainly MagicLeap has garnered the most, but ODG just closed a big round. VR is inherently isolating.
If you need well-researched info on the trends and changing tides of emerging tech to feel confident dipping your toes into the XR sea, SuperData’s Carter Rogers has you covered. I’d say that through at least 2022, the enterprise will account for the majority of augmented and mixed reality headsets like Hololens and MagicLeap.

After having written my predictions for virtual reality in 2020 , let’s see what will be the trends for this year in augmented reality. Regarding big brands, I expect Apple and Facebook still to wait a bit before releasing something, while MagicLeap will have to make its move to come out from the quicksands.
Xu Chi, the CEO and co-founder of #Nreal, a trending mixed reality (MR) start-up. Most people know Xu due to his dispute with American virtual reality company MagicLeap. In June 2019, MagicLeap accused Xu of stealing AR glasses technology when he was an engineer working at the firm. 26- Cher Wang.
To look at how trends in digital, social, and transformational technologies are challenging and changing how we we work, live, and learn. Also put a proposal to Google’s MagicLeap for what I’ve termed ‘EducationXR’. Similarly we’ve got a few Samsung cameras that, like the Theta V, are pretty good consumer cameras.
Facebook has already launched the Quest 2 ; HTC hasn’t tweeted anything, so I expect it to not launch its Quest 2 competitor at this CES ; Nreal is still in the middle of its logistic problems; Samsung is silent; etc… I hope to be wrong, but I don’t think we’ll see any kind of disruptive XR headset at CES 2021.
As I always say about my predictions, I’m not sure they will turn out to be true (and honestly, many times this hasn’t happened), but for sure they identify some trends to keep an eye on. GENERAL TRENDS. I think that in 2022 we’ll mostly see in AR the growth of the same trends that we saw in the second half of 2021.
