Shuhei Yoshida (aka ‘Shu’) has left Sony, closing a near 32-year chapter of his life with the company. Yoshida announced he was leaving Sony back in November, setting his retirement date for January 15th, 2025. “And when I hit 30 years, I was thinking, hmm, it may be about time for me to move on. .”
Honestly speaking, I wasn’t expecting interesting news from this CES in AR and VR, while actually we just had one: Sony has revealed almost all the specifications of the upcoming PlayStation VR 2 headset and its controllers! You can still buy an Oculus Rift S.for now. The company also made the official reveal of the Oculus Quest 2 —a lighter, faster, all-in-one VR headset available this October beginning at $299. You can still order a Rift S via the Oculus website… for now. It’s been an exciting week for VR!
In preparation for the reveal of its next VR headset, Sony today gave a first look at its next-gen VR controller for use with PS5, something that appears very similar to Oculus’ Touch controller. Sony showed off the new controller today, detailing a few of the most impactful changes coming to its VR ecosystem.
Veteran VR developer Aldin Dynamics, the studio behind Waltz of the Wizard , says it is pausing development on PSVR titles until Sony clarifies plans for the future of VR on PS5. “Sony apparently isn’t hellbent on keeping 1st gen PSVR away from PS5, but question remains what they’ll do next. ” he said.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Monday that the company is acquiring Insomniac Games, a storied game studio and one of the most experienced in VR development anywhere in the world. The studio has developed three Oculus exclusive titles, with its fourth and largest yet, Stormland , still due to launch in 2019.

Though I would love to let my birthday piggyback on that accomplishment, credit actually goes to Facebook-owned Oculus, which launched its Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S headsets on that day. Over the weekend, PlayStation VR2's two year anniversary came and passed, with no announcements from Sony then, on Friday, or today. The fact that Sony did not permanently reduce the price two years into the headset's life suggests to me that at $350, Sony wasn't making a profit, and that executives may be unwilling to do this perpetually.

Sony has announced a $100 price drop to their PlayStation VR headset across the board. Bringing prices that haven’t been seen since temporary sales during 2017’s holiday shopping period, Sony is permanently slashing prices on the PlayStation VR, making it more accessible than ever.
