Some people asked me how I did that and in this post, I’m sharing my knowledge giving you some hints about how to replicate the same experience in Unity. It won’t be a step-by-step tutorial, but if you have some Unity skills, it will be enough for you to deliver a mixed reality experience.
I wanted just to experiment with technology, not make a product I’m not going to do a step-by-step tutorial, but if you are a bit experienced with Unity, you can use the info I’m providing you to create something similar yourself. The kitchen is the virtual setting, and the box is the real element living in it.

After Venice VR Expanded has come to an end, I have finally had the time to experiment with Oculus Quest AR Passthrough. What is impressive on the good side is instead the stability of the tracking : we all know that Oculus Insight is the best in class tracking solution among VR headsets, and in AR this is even more important.
Today I made two little big discoveries about the Oculus Quest 2 that together mean that you can use this headset as an AR device whenever and wherever you want. I was able to execute a passthrough app and go all around my office space, and even going out in the streets and keep seeing the real world inside my headset !
Today I’ve played around with Oculus Quest , trying to hack it a bit via command-line tools (ADB), hoping to activate some cool features. I am very passionate about mixed reality and I am incredibly happy of having developed a Unity plugin to let every developer create AR/MR apps on the Vive Focus Plus (you can find it on GitHub !),
Earlier this year the Unity Labs team shared an incredible proof-of-concept mixed reality demo that shows the power of blending the real and virtualworlds together. We can see two other users around the table, and then we see the view transitioning seamlessly between the passthrough view of the real world and the virtualworld.
The latest update to the Oculus Integration for Unity includes a beta release of a spectator camera capability which will allow developers to show a third-person view to spectators watching on a smartphone or web browser. In the first instance, a creator familiar with Unity and 3D modelling softwares can create an XR scene and then upload to STYLY through our Unity Plugin , where a multiformat version of the scene will automatically be created and hosted, allowing anyone to view the scene using a VR HMD, AR smartphone or even WebXR through their browser.

Meta Platforms unveiled last week the latest iteration of its hand-tracking technologies as a demo for developers, allowing users to explore virtualworlds with their hands rather than physical controllers. Modular systems for adjusting hand-tracking functions such as pose recognition and velocity tracking.

In Ready Player One, all the population of the world is inside the Oasis. The Oasis is a fully digital world where everyone can meet and interact with everyone else, in one vs one or many vs many experiences. In the current virtualworlds, though, this is not possible because the networking architectures are not able to support that.
Oculus has also partnered with Virtuclear to offer prescription lenses for the Quest 2 for $80. All the 3 major VR runtimes (Oculus, SteamVR, Microsoft) are now compatible with OpenXR , and this means that on the runtime layer on PC, now OpenXR has been fully integrated. You can now use consumer devices inside Oculus For Business.

This is a cool video of me unboxing the Nreal Light Devkit: I have to say that I loved unboxing this headset : while Nreal has not reached the mastery of packaging that Oculus has, it has done a great job: the external box is in a very elegant silver color, and the case of the glasses is small and beautiful.
All these tools look amazing also for the creation of very realistic VR experiences, but actually, we should hold our enthusiasm: both Nanite and Lumen are not available for VR yet, and Epic has not announced any kind of improvement of the workflow for development for Oculus Quest 2, either.
