Google unveiled its Android XR operating system today, which is coming first to the newly revealed Samsung mixed reality headset, “Project Moohan,” slated for consumer release in 2025. It is however a good bet though, considering Unreal Engine has supported OpenXR for a number of years now.

Riding the wave of excitement over Google’s new VR platform, Daydream, Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri announced on the Google I/O stage today that the gaming giant has brought support for Daydream to Unreal Engine 4. In a collaboration with Hardsuit Labs on the plugin, Epic Games has made Unreal Engine 4 support for Daydream available now.

Fove raised $480,000 on Kickstarter (along with an undisclosed amount from Samsung Ventures) in summer 2015 to manufacture their eye-tracking headset, a technology that’s useful for a number of important applications such as foveated rendering, avatar eye-mapping, simulated depth-of field, and eye-based user interfaces.
The Oculus Rift and Touch, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR (PSVR), Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR, and so many other headsets are all available for purchase. Additionally, Unreal Engine is one of the premier VR development ecosystems and new advancements on the technology side of the company will likely be announced as well.

Another takeaway is that it sounds like the game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine that are used for creating these types of interactive narratives still have a lot of work yet to be done before everyone will be able to easily create their own type of experience that mimics Sequenced’s sophisticated triggering system.
