Sony Corporation announced today that it will invest $250 million in Epic Games, the company well known for its hit game Fortnite and the Unreal Engine game engine that powers it. Unreal Engine is the second most popular game engine for building VR content, and has powered PSVR games like Farpoint , Moss ,and Firewall: Zero Hour.

Epic Games, the creators of Unreal Engine, said it would consider building a launch title for Sony’s “next VR platform” during negotiations about Fortnite cross-play on PlayStation in 2018. And though Epic hasn’t made any VR games since then, it seems that in 2018 it was still ready and willing.

Unreal Engine 5 gets released in Early Access. After a lot of teasing of its upcoming fantastic features, Unreal Engine 5 is finally available for download. Chinese manufacturers BOE and SeeYA may provide cheaper displays in higher quantities than Sony is doing now, while Samsung may be supplying the DRAM components. The second is that “mistaken model of the strategic motivations”, which seems to aim at the fact that Meta has a clear strategy that is not (only) about data mining this time.

I hope that a future rumor clarifies a bit more what is Facebook’s strategy. (Thanks Alessio Palumbo for the tip!). Various months ago, Jason Rubin told the press that he was investigating an exchange of exclusive titles with Sony : his purpose was the one of bringing some of the best PSVR titles, like Resident Evil 7, to the Oculus Store.
